Higher Learning or High Security Prison

What is going on with Virginia State University? Do I attend an institution of of higher learning or maximum security prison. Why is traffic blocked all the way to WaWa because I have to swipe my card to get on campus? Why is the campus constantly on lock down? Why is there a fence being built around the perimeter of the campus? Last time I checked, VSU was an open campus. I'm not sure what's going on I am starting to feel like VSU is America under the Bush Administration and if that is becoming a reality we are all in trouble. The gate is just the first step, soon there will be metal detectors in the entrances to all buildings and visitation on campus will be a thing of the past. VSU students, we need to speak up now before we all have to start taking mug shots.

Buju Banton Silenced

Infamous reggae artist, Buju Banton, scheduled show for in Richmond, VA was cancelled due to protest by the gay community. Since as long as I can remember, reggae artist have been notorious in creating songs with violent lyrics against the gay community. Within the West Indian culture to be considered gay has always been taboo, but its just within recent years have reggae artist been receiving protests about it. So how do you change the perception of any entire culture that's been brought but to believe in this. The gay taboo runs deep within Black culture and will be very difficult to change, but if Buju Banton's shows are getting canceled something must be working in their favor.

Kanye...Why?

Well Mr. West is at it again. On Sept 13, '09 at MTV's Video Music Awards, Kanye West added to his quota of "Haters." While 19 year old country singer, Taylor Swift, was accepting her first ever VMA award for Best Female Video, Kanye West invited himself on stage to state his opinion how he believed Beyonce had the best video of all time and should have won the award. Why Kanye, Why? Why did you feel the need, once again to speak your mind at the wrong place and wrong time? You could have just tweeted about it like everyone else did about your outlandish comment. Why do you feel the need to constantly commit social suicide. I'm all for standing up for what you believe in but, there is definitely a time a place for everything, guess your watch was off.

NASCAR....its Not All About Racing

Sept 9-11 the Nascar Tour made its stop at Virginia State University. They came in with high promotion and many activities such as game shows and giveaways, to help students gain a better knowledge of Nascsr. I was a little sceptical of how receptive VSU students would be to the idea of Nascar, and really if they would even care. Let's be honest, Nascar has never been sport with different shades of people to represent them, so coming to an HBCU I didn't think there were may opportunities for someone like me. I couldn't have been more wrong. Nascar has so many different aspects of careers and opportunities I was amazed. Not only do they great internship opportunities, Nascar also has a diversity program dedicated to reaching out to students of color who might me interested in Nascar. What really changed my perception of Nascar was going to the race itself. Experiencing a live Nascar race and looking at one on television are two very different things. The race was very exciting. The combination watching the pit crew, crashes, and the crowds energy was one I will never forget.

Thats my DJ

So as some of you VSU Trojans all may know, DJ Expo has "left the building" from Richmond, VA and has now relocted to Tampa Bay, Florida. Will I for one am very upset. Now with DJ Expo gone the caliber of many of the signature parties have gone down. DJ Expo is the greatest in the Richmond Tri-Cites area, now that he's gone I need for these other DJ's to step their game up!
